New York Wind Power Hits New High

Wind power is being harnessed in New York at an unprecedented level now with a new record being set after hitting 1,000 megawatts last week.

February 19 saw wind power output hit a level high enough to supply almost five percent of all of the 21,000 MW required by New York. To put into a more recognizable format; 1,000 MW is almost enough power to supply 1,000,000 homes.

New York has experienced a massive boom in wind power generation over the last year and with the Obama stimulus plan investing heavily in renewable energy like solar power and wind energy this trend can be expected to continue.
The beginning of last year saw the total installed wind capacity in New York at 424 MW with the peak total output hit was 375 MW.

Now, New York boasts 1,274 MW of wind capacity and the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) is looking at proposals for another 8,000 MW of wind power.

Not all of those projects are expected to be approved but the NYISO plans to begin an enhanced wind management system to integrate wind power this May in order to be able to handle the massive wind power increase expected.
